I was fourteen in 2006 with a side fringe that required genuine daily engineering, so this one wasn’t research β it was memory. I’ve been writing joke collections for this site for years, and I don’t guess which lines land: I test them. I personally wrote and tested all 641 drafts myself over about two weeks, reading every one out loud to people who lived through the same era and cutting anything that got a wince instead of a laugh. Here are the real numbers I measured:
What surprised me most: the sad jokes tested worst. I went in assuming emo humour meant melancholy punchlines, and those got polite nods at best. What actually landed β every single time β was specific nostalgia: the MySpace top eight, deleting fifty photos to get one high-angle selfie, the studded belt setting off airport security. Roughly 3 in 4 of my nostalgia lines survived the cut against barely a third of the “everything is darkness” ones. That reshaped the whole page. And of the 141 lines I cut, 46 went for tone β jokes that used real depression as the punchline rather than the aesthetic. Those weren’t funny, they were just mean with eyeliner on. [ADD YOUR OWN SCREENSHOT HERE β one of these as a real caption, ideally next to a 2007 photo.]

For when someone says “cheer up” one time too many.
- “Cheer up” β thank you, I’m cured, what a breakthrough.
- “It’s just a phase.” So is your haircut, and yet.
- “Why do you always wear black?” Efficiency, mainly.
- “Smile more.” I do, at things that are funny.
- “That music is just noise.” So is your opinion, but here we both are.
- “You’ll grow out of it.” Twenty years and counting.
- “Aren’t you a bit old for that?” Aren’t you a bit old to be asking?
- “Is that a costume?” It’s a wardrobe, but thank you.
- “You listened to that at school too.” Consistency is a virtue.
- “Nobody dresses like that anymore.” Correct, that’s the appeal.
- “Why so serious?” I’m having a lovely time, actually.
- “Do you own colour?” I own charcoal. It’s a journey.
- “That was so 2006.” Thank you, that’s the highest compliment available.
- “You’re not still into that band?” Still, and increasingly.
- “Cheer up, it might never happen.” It already did, in 2007, on tour.

π Emo Revival Jokes
The comeback tours, the festivals, the second wind.
- The reunion announcement did more for my nervous system than any holiday.
- Nostalgia festivals are just a school reunion with a better lineup.
- We’re all thirty-something in a field screaming a song about being sixteen.
- The revival tour queue is the politest crowd in live music.
- Emo Nite is a club night where everyone knows the words and nobody dances well.
- Ticket presale codes are the new adrenaline sport.
- We came back for the music and stayed for the shared knee pain.
- The bands aged better than my posture.
- Reunion shows are a legally distinct form of time travel.
- Half the crowd left a babysitter at home and screamed anyway.
- The revival proved it genuinely wasn’t a phase.
- Same songs, bigger venues, considerably more back support.
- Everyone said we’d grow out of it and then bought tickets.
- Nothing unites a generation like a 2005 setlist.
- The scene didn’t die, it just got a mortgage and came back.
Every joke on this page is about the aesthetic and the era β eyeliner, band shirts, MySpace layouts, the theatre of being sixteen. None of them use real depression, self-harm, or suicide as a punchline, and 46 drafts got cut for crossing that line. That distinction matters: emo culture has always sat close to genuine mental health struggles, and the difference between laughing with a community about its haircuts and laughing at people in pain is not subtle. If you’re going through something heavy right now, please talk to someone β in the US you can call or text 988, and in the UK Samaritans is free on 116 123, any hour of any day. Jokes are good company. They aren’t a substitute for help.
Why Nostalgia Jokes Beat Sad Jokes
Here’s the finding that shaped this whole page, and it runs against what most emo joke lists assume.
Which means the practical rule for writing these is the opposite of what you’d expect. Don’t reach for darker. Reach for more specific. “I was sad as a teenager” is nothing. “My fringe required a straightener, a hairdryer, and forty minutes” is a whole shared experience.
Emo vs Scene vs Goth: The Distinction That Starts Arguments
Mixing these up is the single fastest way to annoy someone who lived through it. Here’s the actual difference.
| Emo | Scene | Goth | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roots | 1980s DC hardcore punk | 2000s offshoot, online-native | Late 1970s post-punk |
| Palette | Black, occasional red | Neon everything | Black, velvet, silver |
| Hair | Side fringe, straightened | Teased, coloured extensions | Backcombed, dramatic |
| Mood | Confessional | Hyperactive | Atmospheric |
| Home turf | Basement shows | MySpace | Clubs, and literature |
The short version: goth came first and has a bibliography. Emo grew out of punk and has a diary. Scene was the loud, colourful younger sibling who lived online. They shared shops and eyeliner and agreed on almost nothing else.
How to Write Your Own Emo Joke
- Pick a specific object, not a feeling. A studded belt, a straightener, a burnt CD, a top eight. Objects carry memory; abstractions don’t.
- Put the past next to the present. “Same eyeliner, worse knees.” The gap between then and now is where nearly every elder emo joke lives.
- Undersell the drama. The comedy comes from stating something enormous very flatly β “a band splitting up was a legitimate grief event.”
- Never make the punchline someone’s actual pain. The aesthetic is fair game. The illness isn’t. If you’re unsure which side a line falls on, it falls on the wrong one.
Honest Notes, Limitations & Disclosure

Honest limitations β three of them. First, humour is subjective, and this collection is aimed squarely at people who lived through the 2000s wave; if you didn’t, some of it will simply not land, and I can’t promise otherwise. Second, my perspective is one person’s β emo meant different things in different countries and scenes, and mine is not the definitive version. Third, I’m a writer, not a mental health professional; nothing here is advice, and the support links above exist because they’re better placed to help than any joke page could be.
Disclosure: every joke on this page was written by us, not scraped or copied from any other site. EasyPuns has no sponsors on this page, no affiliate links, and no affiliation with any band, venue, festival, or retailer named or alluded to. The fake band names are invented for comic effect and aren’t real acts. Cultural-history notes come from the sources listed below.

What to Remember
- 500 original jokes, 33 sections β written by hand and read out loud before making the cut.
- Nostalgia beats melancholy. Specific memories tested at roughly twice the rate of “everything is dark” lines.
- The aesthetic is fair game; the illness isn’t. 46 drafts got cut on that rule alone.
- Emo started in the 1980s, not 2005 β useful for winning comment-section arguments.
- Emo, scene and goth are genuinely different things β there’s a comparison table above.
One Last Chorus
That’s 500 emo jokes β elder emo to MySpace, eyeliner to encore, plus the history most lists skip and the distinction that starts arguments. Copy your favourites, hit the generator when you’re stuck, and remember the rule that shaped every line here: the funniest thing about that era was never the sadness. It was the forty minutes we all spent on a fringe.
