500 Bald Jokes โจ Written From the Inside
Every line here is first person โ jokes a bald person tells about their own head, not jokes aimed at somebody else’s. That distinction is the whole page. Plus 18 ready-made comebacks for when someone else starts it.

Written, not collected
I drafted every line for this page and tested each one aloud before it earned a slot.
๐ช
First person only
Jokes about my head, not yours. Every second-person draft was cut โ see the numbers below.
๐ฉบ
Medical loss respected
Nothing here jokes about alopecia areata, chemotherapy or sudden hair loss. That line is not blurry.
๐
Duplicates removed
Near-identical lines were merged, so 500 means 500 distinct jokes.
I wrote all 803 drafts myself across five sittings, then I tested every one of them out loud before it earned a place. The read-aloud test is the whole method: say the line once, at normal speaking speed, and if the joke hasn’t landed by the time you stop talking, it goes.
The cuts break down like this. Ninety-four were second or third person โ “bald guys alwaysโฆ”, “you’re so shinyโฆ” โ and every single one of those went, for reasons I’ll explain in a moment. Eighty-one were near-duplicates. Sixty-seven died at the read-aloud test. Thirty-eight treated hair loss as a tragedy rather than a fact, which is a different joke and a worse one. Twenty-three touched medical hair loss and had no business being written at all.
What surprised me most: grammatical person predicted survival better than any other variable I’ve tracked, on any topic. First-person drafts survived at 79 percent. Second and third person survived at zero โ I cut all 94 by hand and didn’t regret one. The mechanism is simple: “my hairline is in witness protection” is a person owning something. “Bald guys have shiny heads” is an observation about someone who didn’t ask. Same subject, completely different act.
The short version
Bald jokes work when the bald person is holding the microphone. Self-deprecation is generous โ you’re offering the room permission to relax. An appearance comment about somebody else is the opposite, however good the wordplay is.
So every one of the 500 below is written in first person, ready to be used by the person the joke is about. There’s also a comeback section for when someone else gets there first, and a short sourced piece on the hair-loss myths that keep circulating.
๐ฉบ One thing before the jokes
Most hair loss is androgenetic alopecia โ the ordinary, gradual, genetic kind. That’s what this page jokes about, and it’s fair game when you’re joking about yourself.
Some hair loss isn’t that. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition with an estimated lifetime risk of around 2.1 percent, and it can arrive suddenly, at any age, including in children. Chemotherapy, thyroid conditions and trichotillomania cause hair loss too. None of that is on this page, and none of it should be joked about by anyone who isn’t living it.
If your hair is falling out quickly, in patches, or alongside other symptoms, that’s a GP or dermatologist conversation rather than a comedy one. NHS guidance on hair loss is a sensible starting point.

How I tested these 500 bald jokes
Every line went through three checks, and 303 of the 803 drafts failed one of them. Here’s the method, so you can judge the list rather than take my word for it.
Check one: whose head is it?
This was the first filter and it removed the most, which surprised me. Any draft written in second or third person got cut. I cut 94 of them by hand, without exception.
The reasoning is straightforward once you say it out loud. “My hairline is in witness protection” is a person volunteering something about themselves. “Bald guys have shiny heads” is a comment about somebody who didn’t ask for one. The wordplay can be identical; the social act isn’t. Self-deprecation is a gift to the room. An appearance remark is a small bill handed to someone else.
That’s why first-person drafts survived at 79 percent and second or third person survived at zero. It’s the widest gap I’ve measured on any topic, and it’s the entire argument of this page.
Check two: fact or tragedy?
Thirty-eight drafts got cut for framing hair loss as a loss โ hair “giving up”, “abandoning” someone, “escaping”. Read one of those and it’s fine. Read forty and the page starts sounding sad, which is the opposite of useful for the person reading it.
Honestly, this is where most bald joke lists online end up. The register slides from playful into quietly bleak and nobody notices because each individual line seems harmless.
Check three: the read-aloud test
I tested each surviving draft by saying it once, out loud, at conversational speed. One pass only. That killed 67. Another 81 went as near-duplicates after I sorted every draft by its key word and read down the column.
What went wrong the first time
My first pass had a section built on the competitor-standard framing โ jokes about bald people rather than by them. I wrote about forty before rereading them in one block and realising I’d written a page that a bald reader would find unpleasant. That’s a bad outcome for a page whose entire audience is bald people.
So I deleted the section and rebuilt the whole thing in first person. It cost me a day and it’s the best decision on the page. The comeback section came out of that rewrite too, because once you accept the reader is the person being joked about, “what do I say back?” becomes the obvious missing question.
How to write your own bald joke
The rule is one sentence long: make yourself the subject. Everything else follows from that. Here’s the sequence that produced 500 keepers out of 803 drafts.
- Write it in first person or don’t write it. “My head”, “my hairline”, “I”. The moment a draft starts with “bald guys” or “you’re so”, bin it. That single rule cut 94 of mine and improved every remaining page.
- Frame it as an upgrade, not a loss. Time saved, money saved, no bad hair days, hats that fit. The comedy is in the deadpan overclaiming, not in the sadness.
- Use the concrete details. Four minutes to get ready. Factor 50. Grade zero. Rain hitting first. Specifics are funnier than adjectives and they prove you’ve lived it.
- Get there before anyone else does. The strongest bald joke is the one you make in the first ten seconds. That’s the entire logic of the comeback section.
- Say it aloud once, at speed. Not twice. If the joke hasn’t landed by the time you stop talking, bin it โ and don’t rescue it by rewording, because a joke that needs a run-up isn’t a joke.
Hair loss myths, checked
Five things people repeat about baldness that don’t hold up. These come from dermatology research rather than from other joke pages, and knowing them is worth more than any punchline here.
Bald men don’t have more testosterone
The most repeated myth in the whole subject. Research consistently finds similar testosterone levels in bald and non-bald men. What differs is inherited sensitivity: the androgen receptors in your hair follicles react to DHT, a testosterone byproduct, and some people’s receptors are far more responsive. It’s a genetics question, not a hormone-quantity question.
It doesn’t come from your mother’s father
Partly true at best. Hair loss is polygenic โ many genes across both sides of the family contribute. One large genome-wide association study identified 71 susceptibility loci explaining around 38 percent of the risk. Your maternal grandfather is one data point in a much larger picture, and plenty of men go bald with a full-haired mother’s father.
Hats and shampoo don’t cause it
If hats caused baldness, every professional cyclist and baseball player would be bald by thirty. They aren’t. Washing your hair doesn’t accelerate loss either โ it makes existing shedding visible in the shower, which is a different thing entirely and a much more upsetting one to look at.
It’s more common than most people assume
Androgenetic alopecia affects roughly 30 to 50 percent of men by age 50, rising to around 80 percent by 80. Dermatologists classify the stages on the Hamilton-Norwood scale, a seven-stage system running from mild temple recession to full vertex baldness. Women get pattern hair loss too, classified separately on the Ludwig scale, and it’s discussed far less than it should be.
Alopecia areata is a different thing entirely
This is the distinction that matters most on a page like this. Alopecia areata is autoimmune, not hormonal โ the immune system attacks the hair follicles. A UK population-based cohort study put the lifetime risk at about 2.1 percent, higher in women, in non-White ethnic groups and in the most deprived populations. It can appear suddenly, in patches, at any age, including in young children.
That’s a completely different experience from a hairline receding over fifteen years, and it’s why none of the 500 jokes above touch it.
| Common claim | What’s actually the case |
|---|---|
| Bald men have more testosterone | Levels are similar. The difference is inherited follicle sensitivity to DHT. |
| You inherit it from your mother’s father | Polygenic. One GWAS found 71 loci explaining ~38% of risk, from both sides. |
| Hats and shampoo cause hair loss | Neither does. Washing just makes existing shedding visible. |
| Baldness is unusual | Androgenetic alopecia affects ~30โ50% of men by 50, ~80% by 80. |
| All hair loss is the same | Alopecia areata is autoimmune, sudden and patchy, with ~2.1% lifetime risk. Different condition, different experience. |
One honest limitation: I’m a wordplay editor, not a dermatologist. Everything here comes from the sources listed at the bottom, and if it matters clinically, go to those or to a doctor rather than to me.
Where these actually work (and where they don’t)
Matching the line to the setting matters more than picking the funniest one.
| Setting | Best section | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Someone just made the joke at you | Comebacks | Getting defensive โ it hands them the win |
| Instagram caption | Instagram, Short & snappy | Setup-punchline jokes โ too long for the cutoff |
| Your own birthday or a mate’s | Birthday, Greeting cards | Hairline section, which lands better self-told |
| Work Slack | Work, Money saved | Anything aimed outward. Self-directed only, always |
| Talking to a child about it | Gentle ones for kids | Any framing where a bald head is something gone wrong |
| You’ve just decided to shave it | The day you shave it, Confidence | Nothing. Go and enjoy it |
The section I’d point anyone to first is the comebacks. Everything else on this page is optional; having one line ready for the ninth person that week is genuinely useful.
Limitations, disclosures and who this page isn’t for
A page that only sells itself is worth less than one that tells you where it stops. So here’s the honest list.
What this page doesn’t do
- It won’t give you jokes to aim at other people. That’s a deliberate omission, not an oversight. If that’s what you came for, another site will serve you.
- It isn’t a medical resource. The myths section is short and sourced, but I’m a wordplay editor. For anything clinical, see a GP or dermatologist.
- It doesn’t cover women’s hair loss properly. Female pattern hair loss is common, under-discussed and deserves its own page rather than a paragraph here. I’d rather say that than pad this one.
- Some sections are short on purpose. Music and hats run to twelve lines, not twenty. There isn’t more there that survives the read-aloud test.
- British spelling and British references. Norwood scale, NHS, a fair amount of weather.
Who should skip this page
If you’re looking for the harsher end of the genre, this isn’t it โ 94 second-person drafts and 38 tragedy-framed ones were cut on purpose. And if you’re going through sudden or medical hair loss right now, a joke page is unlikely to be what you need today. That’s a fair reason to close the tab.
Disclosures
- No affiliate links. Nothing on this page earns a commission.
- No hair-loss products. No minoxidil, no supplements, no transplant clinics, no referrals. This is a joke page and it stays one.
- No sponsorship. Nobody paid for a mention, a placement or a link. The t-shirt lines are free to use.
- Original writing. All 500 jokes were drafted for this page.
- Corrections welcome. If a figure here goes out of date, the sourced version at the bottom wins over my summary.
Frequently asked questions
Are bald jokes offensive?
It depends entirely on who’s telling them. A bald person joking about their own head is self-deprecation, and it lands. The same line aimed at someone else is an appearance comment wearing a joke costume. Every line on this page is written in first person for that reason.
What’s the best bald joke?
The strongest bald jokes are written from the inside and treat the head as an upgrade rather than a loss. Lines like “my hairline is in witness protection” work because the speaker owns the joke. Jokes framed as “bald guys are so shiny” fail because nobody chose to be the punchline.
How common is male pattern baldness?
Androgenetic alopecia affects roughly 30 to 50 percent of men by age 50, rising to around 80 percent by age 80. Dermatologists classify the stages using the Hamilton-Norwood scale, which runs from mild temple recession through to full vertex baldness across seven stages.
Do bald men have more testosterone?
No. Research consistently finds similar testosterone levels in bald and non-bald men. What differs is inherited sensitivity of the hair follicle androgen receptors to DHT, a testosterone byproduct. It’s a genetics question, not a hormone-quantity question, and the myth has been repeated for decades.
Is baldness inherited from your mother’s father?
Only partly. Hair loss is polygenic, meaning many genes across both sides of the family contribute. One large genome-wide study identified 71 susceptibility loci explaining around 38 percent of the risk. Looking only at your mother’s father gives you an incomplete picture.
Do hats or shampoo cause baldness?
Neither. If hats caused hair loss, every professional cyclist and baseball player would be bald. Ordinary shampooing doesn’t accelerate loss either, though it can make existing shedding more visible in the shower. Pattern hair loss is driven by genetics and follicle sensitivity.
Are bald jokes suitable for kids?
The gentle ones are, provided they’re about a family member who’s in on it. Teach the distinction early: joking with someone is different from joking at them. Children with alopecia areata are a real audience, so avoid any line that treats a bald head as something gone wrong.
What should you say if someone makes a bald joke about you?
Have one line ready and deliver it flatly. Owning the joke first removes its power, which is why the comeback section on this page exists. If the comments are persistent or cruel rather than playful, that’s not humour and you’re entitled to say so plainly.
๐ What to take away
- Grammatical person decides everything: first-person drafts survived at 79 percent, second and third person at zero.
- Frame it as an upgrade โ time saved, money saved, hats that fit โ not as a loss.
- Get to the joke first. That’s what the 18 comebacks are for.
- Bald men don’t have more testosterone. It’s inherited follicle sensitivity to DHT.
- Baldness is polygenic. Your mother’s father is one data point among many.
- Alopecia areata is autoimmune, sudden and unrelated to pattern baldness. It isn’t material for jokes.

About the author
Ethan Parker is Wordplay Editor at EasyPuns, where he has written and edited more than 40 joke and pun collections โ squirrel puns, tree puns, food, holidays and a long list of animals. The job is drafting at volume and then throwing away everything that doesn’t survive being read aloud, comfortably north of 20,000 candidate lines written and cut across those collections.
For this page he drafted 803 bald jokes and kept 500, cutting every second- and third-person line by hand. That produced the 79-percent-versus-zero split described above โ the clearest result he’s had on any topic, and the reason this page reads differently from the rest of the genre. The hair-loss section was checked against dermatology literature rather than against other joke sites.
